While the DS complemented the Wii.

The 3DS offers a similar but cheaper experience to that of the Wii U.

The 3DS also offers a new The Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, Professor Layton, Pokémon, Kirby, Mario Party and Kid Icarus. The systems aren't comparable.

 

As someone said earlier, Wii U is Wii U's worst enemy. Once it has received proper software support and a lower price tag, people will pick it up.
