To be fair, there are also ships available at $30 with the full game, and each ship will be able to be gotten in-game through single-player.

Ok, so buying the ships lets you use them in a beta right now or how does this work?

You can use them in the beta, and you get longer "insurance" than you would if you got them in the normal game. Any ship will be able to be gotten with a bit of patience in the normal game.
