Except PC is nowwhere near a niche market. Do you realise how many people use Steam now? Your statement is ignorant beyond belief.

There were 75 million steam accounts as of Januari 2014. Current peak usage is 6.8 million users. But even that counts all people that are logged in. I'm always logged in on Steam on my laptop (to check deals now and then, and what's new). Yet I rarely actually play a game on Steam. Last was The Stanley parable from the last sale. I can't be the only one to just leave it 'on'
Then look at the hardware stats, how many of those users have a gaming pc that can keep up with ps4 and xbox one. And the latest Ubisoft Q1 earnings showed PC revenue slice down to 17%.
I would take those 75 million user accounts with a grain of salt, just like those 150 million psn accounts.

PC not a niche market, gaming pcs are though. Most people don't care and game on what they have, or simply buy stuff in sales and never play most of them...

Anyway both pc and consoles are a niche market compared to 1.5 billion smart phones in the world. It's all relative.

Most people who are continuously logged into your Steam account use it. Steam logs off so much (when you restart your PC, swithc users, etc.) that most people wouldn't re-enter their passwords twice a day unless they use it in some way.

My laptop is always on (sits on the table plugged in), I never switch users, restart once a month maybe, then Steam auto logs in anyway. (re-enter password?) My up time according to the task manager is 43 days atm. For all the negative, MS got a stable one with windows 8!
The only time Steam logs me out is when I drag my desktop over to the projector to play a pc game there. Can't be logged in on two locations at once. That was months ago.
Maybe I'm unique, maybe other people use it to chat, who knows how many people are actually playing.
