The population of Northern Ireland wanted to remain part of the UK. They were initialy going to be independent with the rest of Ireland.

The US gained independence from Britain as a result of the American Revolutionary War. This came about from a disagreement over taxes being paid to Britain.

The Civil was was against the southern states about 80 years later. Slavery was a big factor in this war.
