Whew!  I gave up trying to keep track of which games people have already mentioned.  I'll just list what I remember playing and if I'm repeating others... oh well.

Shinobi series - Revenge, Shadow Dancer, etc...

Thunder Force series

Sonic series

Strike series - Desert, Jungle, Urban

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Yes, really!  I honestly liked that game )

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts

Strider

Street Fighter

Mortal Kombat

Fatal Fury

Golden Axe

Alien 3

Phantom 2040

Batman: The Video Game (Some of the best chip music ever in this game, IMHO)

Splatterhouse

Super Monaco GP (I'm not hugely into racing games but I enjoyed this one)

Road Rash (Racing games where you get to wrap a chain around your opponent's head, on the other hand...)

Truxton

Hellfire

Mercs

Zero Tolerance (A first-person shooter)... ... ... (No, seriously!)

Streets of Rage (The best beat-em-up series ever made)

And on that note, I'll add something for Streets of Rage fans.  In case you don't know about about it, there is a "fan game" (I use the quotes because while that term may be technically true, it doesn't do the game justice) called Streets of Rage Remake, and if you haven't played it yet... PLAY IT!  Seriously, it's brilliant!  It's the best tribute to a classic series I've ever seen.

It was made by an independent group called Bombergames and they worked on it for... are you ready?... eight years!  And it shows.  It's basically the best of the series in one game, with branching paths, a ton of endings, all sorts of customizability, and my personal favourite - a modding tool.

Unfortunately, Bombergames were forced to take the game down shortly after release, but it's still available elsewhere.  If you're interested in more info about the game, here's the original blog post...

Here's the Remake's page on soronline, including detailed information, download links, and mods for the game...

Also, here is where I believe the posters and modders from the original community moved to when the old forum shut down...

Also, for the OP, one more thing about the Genesis itself.  I don't know if you care about this kind of thing, but some time ago I seem to recall Rich from ReviewTech doing videos on modding the Genesis to display in HD.

Ok, I found them...

Like I said, that particular angle may not interest you but I figured it couldn't hurt to point it out.
