In my view, the three fill the industry very nicely.
Nintendo innovates and Microsoft sustains the innovations that are popular. Sony likes to be somewhere in the middle as they like experimenting from time to time, just not going as all-in as Nintendo (Eye toy, their touchscreen dualshock, upcoming VR device).
I'm oversimplifying like hell. But just throwing that generalization out there, that's how I see the big 3 right now.
