Last time an old school platformer tried an open world approach, it didn't end up well. Just look Sonic 06.

I wouldn't call Sonic '06 open world, a platformer, or a game.

As for what you'd do in it, I was just thinking you'd collect coins and find stars, invade bowser's dozen or so castles to rescue toads/princesses or break curses by murdering the koopa kids lol.

Have a kart instead of a mount so you could spend the coins on something, and just spend the rest of your time using your platforming skills to explore the world more in depth than ever before.
