This is probably nothing, but if it's true it really shakes my faith in the PS brand. What will Sony do if one of their home consoles doesn't sell well?

It's nothing to worry about. Vita was never really a priority for Sony. In fact I am surprised they even made it. The PS3 sold poorly as well for a while, but Sony cares a LOT more about home consoles than handhelds, so the PS3 was able to turn around.

Why would discontinuing or SIGNIFICANTLY reducing shipments shake your faith in the brand?

Because it's being dropped like a rock. The PS3 never did this poorly so it isn't a great comparison. At least when you buy a Nintendo console, you can be sure that even if it sells poorly they will still pour their heart and soul into it. Minus the Virtual Boy of course, but that thing sold way way worse than the Vita.

One other thing to note is that even when Nintendo consoles sell poorly they still have strong software sales which is another thing retailers likely look at. Ive read before that digital sales account for like 30-35% of all Vita software, if thats true then retailers likely arent making any money from software either.
