I've never seen an episode of Desperate Housewives, but I've heard some people who liked that show love this, so it wouldn't hurt to just try out the Pilot episode. The show is now in it's 5th season and the 100th episode airs next Tuesday. The show was also just renewed for 2 more seasons. There are 24-25 episodes a season, and only the 4th episode this season aired tonight.
