The common talk from a few years ago was that SONY could not possibly keep the extremely high market share of the PS2. I saw the high priced PS3 as more of a new "NUON for Blu-ray" whereby SONY cashed in some of their market share (due to high price), but got a leg up in the video market.
As I see it, Ken K's downfall wasn't the high priced PS3, but that he didn't foresee the Wii.
