I knew a guy that bought a PS3 at the time just because "it's 600€ and I'm rich"... so yeah, owning a console doesn't make you a gamer.

Pretty much this^^^

Owning the consle is one thing.  Using it to play games is a whole other story!

Is there really anybody who has ever bought a console and not actually played games on it?

When the PS2 came out, it was the best and cheapest DVD player on the market.  Many people bought it for that alone.  When the PS3 came out, it was the BEST bluray player for half the price on the market.  It too sold a lot of units for that feature alone.

THere is not way to put a number on that, but if you look at game attach rates on the PS2 and PS3 compared to other consoles, it kind of makes sense.

I wouldn't say it was the "Best" DVD player!  There were a lot of DVD's that didn't even work on the PS2 when it launched originally.  They had to release an update disc and even then, I'd still rent movies that wouldn't work.  I'd have to take them back to the video store (man, I feel like an old man just saying that!) and exchange the DVD for the VHS version.   Later PS2 releases were fully compatible, though.  But I do agree that there was a time when the PS2 was used more as a DVD player than a game device.  Until late 2001, mine gathered a lot of dust when it wasn't being used for movies.

Yeah, I managed Best Buy stores when the PS2 launched.  After the intital launch wave,  If you didn't have the PS2 remote in stock, it was a lot harder to sell the system.  Back then, it was mostly Mom's and Dad's buying the systems.

It is near the end of the end....
