Gaming is doing just fine. You're probably just done with gaming. I think part of the problem you speak of is yourself. You seem to have concerned yourself too much with whatever the vocal minority or mainstream are talking about.
Sure certain games are popular, but I don't see a problem with that. There is still a huge variety of games to play and I'm just going to ENJOY myself. I'll just have FUN. You know, ENJOYMENT and FUN? The two factors games are meant to provide. If for some people 1080p 60FPS is fun, then great for them. I'll enjoy what is fun for me and let others enjoy what they like.
If you're no longer having FUN playing games, its about time to quit this hobby.
