No man's sky is about whatever you make it to  be. There are fleets of ships that you can ally yourself with or make enemies of. There is space combat as well as ground combat. The problen isn't in no man's sky, but in your own narrow definition of what it should be. It's not a cinematic experience, you don't get mmo type quests where you're told to go kill 5 gnolls or something stupid like that.

 

You do explore planets, you can collect resources for trade if you want. You can do whatever it is you want. The idea of finding a "treasure" is incredibly gamey anyways.

 

Not to mention there are so many worlds and variations in the No Man's Sky universe, that the developer doesn't even know the full extent of what's out there.
