While I marvel at the size and scope of the game, especially considering the small ten-person team at Hello Games, it's hard for me to get too excited for No Man's Sky. As a sandbox and a social experiment, the game looks very interesting. But, in terms of gameplay, it doesn't look especially challenging or rewarding. Yes, I'm impressed by the procedurally generated worlds, but the thing that makes a great game is its set of challenges and the ways in which players accomplish those challenges. Apart from a rampaging beast and a few enemy ships, I didn't see many challenges.

This video, however, made me a little more optimistic. Knowing that players can upgrade ships, work cooperatively with other players, and strive toward an ultimate goal -- in this case the center of the galaxy -- puts my mind at ease. I'm still not sold on the game, but it's a step in the right direction.

In any event, I hope the studio finds success. This is clearly a labor of love.
