For the Vita, Sony has backed projects like Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, Gravity Rush, and Oreshika. With the PS4, we know that they're co-developing Deep Down, Bloodborne, and at least one more.

They're using a different model than in the west, sure, but even in the west, Sony has a long history of co-developing games with third-party studios. That's not abandonment.

Personally, I think this gen will see less wholly owned studios and more contracted development situations. Both Nintendo and Microsoft are doing the same.

I see what you're saying, but even then their library of AAA Japansese games is relatively meager. Co-developing is fine, but still most of those games are small to medium sized projects (with the exception of Deep Down/Bloodborne, which are both firmly third-party, not really co-developed).
