You're contradicting yourself.

Suggestion -  watch the trailer again, then pay attention to how everything else but the kid is rendered VS how the kid is rendered.

Kid pops out from everything. They are most likely using different shader for him, one that is more cartooney.

For comaparison, check old vs 'new' trailer...in old, everything is rendered the same way:

 

 

If you still don't see it, I'm afraid I cannot help you anymore than that.

I agree with you, the kid sticks out where as the rest looks more realistic.
