It has already been proven that the human eye can benefit from better pixel density all the way up to 200 pixels per degree (That's where double blind tests turn into pure guessing at which has better picture quality) It's not about not being able to see individual pixels, but about seeing a smooth picture with no traces of the pixel grid.

In my experience going to between 100 and 120 pixels per degree gives a great picture. Still needs some AA but it looks almost life like. Sit twice as far away as this calculator suggests for best results, or enter 20/10 vision.

I don't doubt that th ehuman eye can probably resolve better than what this chart may suggest. But I sincerely feel that if you stay at the suggested distance from the screen (in relation to your screen size and resolution) to be able to make out the pixel grid on your display becomes very tasking. Like in my case I have to start focusing into a super specific area on the screena and squint..... I strongly doubt anyone uses their displays like that.

True, but you can still easily see aliasing artifacts, even more so in moving pictures. Plus from my sitting distance I can see the slight deficiency in the 3 LCD array of my projector that is slightly misaligned at the right side. The RGB elements are less than half a pixel off, yet pc text is clearly less sharp on the right edge. I see a big upgrade in sharpness between my projector and tv. (52" suggested 81", I sit at 140")

Sitting at a distance at which you can almost see the individual pixels is a pointless goal. Ofcourse it's a lot harder to define a distance at which aliasing or other pixel grid side effects don't occur anymore.


Anyway for fun, to check what the max resolution is you 'need' for your setup (with 20/20 vision with this model)
1685 * Diagonal size / Sitting distance gives you the max vertical resolution you should need.

So for my tv I should be happy with 1685 * 52 / 140 = 626p
For my projector I could use 1685 * 92 / 135 = 1148p

Now I can definitely say that the difference between 720p and 1080p is quite noticeable on my tv, sub 720p games even more. (Ofcourse upscaling also degrades/softens the image)

Edit: I see that display calculator does this already, just click on resolution and fill in 1.777 for aspect ratio to get your suggested resolution.
