...or why I do not own a 360/PS3.
Okay, so I took my car into the local shop to get the tires inflated and oil changed (it was down to 24% of the maximum). This being a relatively new car (got it last year), I hadn't had any large maintenance on it just yet.
So they looked at the tires after raising it and discovered damage to both the tires and rotors. It seemed the front brake pads had worn down and were scarring the rotors. So... an oil change suddenly became new tires, new front rotors/brake pads. Oh, and let's throw in a wheel alignment to boot because both the front and rear toe-in angles were off. Ouch.
It turns out that the previous owner before me had also not done a proper job of undercoating the body consequently there was a fair amount of rust as well (anyone who lives in a place that regularly gets snow will understand why). I actually had a look at the rotors after they took them off and I can honestly say they was in really really bad shape. The damage was not only visible but plentiful.
They also mentioned that the airfilter was scheduled for maintenance but not to bother replacing it unless I was having problems. I agreed with them and decided not to have that done since I hadn't noticed any problems.
All in all, I was very satisfied with the service and the skills of the people who did the work. They walked me through each step showing me what was wrong and how they were fixing it (that was really nice of them ^_^). Still... the cost was painful to look at.
