I think the chances are about 50-50 the X1 will ever take over the Wii U, but I do think the Wii U will hold #2.
Whenever you talk consoles online people always bring up three things:
- Exclusives
- Price
- Power
The Wii U is weaker by far, but it also has price in spades and is working on exclusives. What's powering the PS4 and X1 is basically a hype-train of new hardware, but once that cools off the Wii U will have the stronger purchase argument because it doesn't compete with PC or the PS4/X1 consoles for titles.
I don't think that will push the Wii U into first or anything, but that's enough to keep it in #2, sure. Last gen the PS3/ 360 split third party support. This gen third party support will get split across the PS4 and PC, leaving the Wii U as a niche product and the X1 in the cold.
