Nintendo, to a point, is a machine MADE to not loss-lead and sell 100M consoles per gen. The Wii kind of threw them off, though attachment rate was probably 1/3rd of what you'd expect in that bizarre situation. Microsoft OTOH planned for the 2nd coming of Jesus numbers with their console, and fell right into a steaming pile of dogshit. It's doubtful they will ever turn a profit on XB1 unless they crack at least 360 numbers. If you don't know what I mean, it's the vast R&D and corporate salary/bonus expenditures that sink their budgets, not to mention vast sums invested in Kinect2, buying Titanfall, 100-200M marketing campaigns all over the place, etc. The numbers will be horrifying when they finally get leaked down the line. They're masters of obfuscation, but the truth eventually emerges. |
The Wii has the highest attach rate of any nintendo home console so far.

It had an admirable attach rate, but still far short of PS360, because of all the consoles sold to people who closeted them and never bought a single game (hype buyers for Wii Fit, etc).
