It was an old PC shareware game called "Jill of the Jungle". What made me realize it, was the fact that the game literally insulted many of the populaqr franchises of the day (Mario, duke nukem, commander keen) while being inferior to all of them. even as a kid, it made me take a closer look at the game that decided it was better than all others... and it was decidedly inferior.
Also, honorable mention, playing through my dad's old atari games... ET. Not actually sure which I played first. But whichever it was get's the dishonor of being my first.
