My main point was:

"Nintendo games sell to mostly the same audience. But their consoles need a larger audience, one their games can't bring in. Its pretty obvious."

The Vita isn't really a counterpoint to that because it has no third-party support. The PSP didn't have much either but it had tons of first-party games which made it sell along with a very few third-party games.

However PS home consoles always sell well and they have great third-party support. Nintendo home consoles haven't sold well since they lost third-party support except for the Wii.

That proves my point that Nintendo needs third-party support for their home consoles to sell well.

In that case, explain to me how Nintendo sold so much software on their handhelds, if the Wii is an exception? What tastes was Nintendo so much more able to cater to on that front?

the handhelds have 3rd party, they have ALWAYS had 3rd party support. DS especially.
