In a way i would say he is right more so than ever. It depends on the games. A title like beyond two souls or heavy rain is so story related that people might think they have seen all they need by watching it. I also think there is a large crowd of people who likes the idea of videogames but cant get their head around actually playing them. In the end videogames are different but it is still a consumable media where you get the visuals and audio from it like you do with streaming a movie. The movie industry is popular because you dont need to participate and some people would surely like to treat games as movies as not feeling the need to have interaction with it. Think of it like a sports match. Youll still watch it even though it is in nature an interactive experience. Now of course no one knows how many that are satisfied with just watching are actually consumers lost or how many who watch it and decides to buy it because it is intruiging to them. But there havent to my recollection be made any reseaech on this.
