Say what? Brazil totally went out of its group in 1974! Poland defeated Brazil in the game for 3rd place after all.

It has happened twice - France in 2002 and Italy in 2010. It seems to be a European speciality ;)

It has happened four times - also in 1966 and 1950 when Brazil and Italy respectively didn't make through the first round.

There is 1934 too, when Uruguay didn't even make it to the tournament...
