How is possible for the Wii U to sell this bad? I guess the market is finally reacting to the saturation of consoles. If this is the trend then we won't see 3 main home consoles for long.

This is my analysis:

1. The age of owning multiple consoles is over. People want to play all their games on 1 and only 1 console. Similar to DVD and Blu-ray players. People don't want to buy a new BR player just to watch movies published by Sony then buy another to watch other exclusive movies. This IS the future.

2. Casuals don't want the Wii U. In fact, I think casuals are done playing console-based games unless VR takes off and becomes accessible.

3. Sony and MS gamers don't want to be taxed in addition to buying games at MSRP. The Wii U is a tax on gamers. It makes no sense to buy two consoles for the average consumer.

You may or may not be correct, but I agree with you, because I certainly don't have the need for more than one console. I actually think it's also not just a function of money, but also of time. Very few people actually have enough spare time to spread it across two consoles.

There is a dedicated hardcore gamer segment that might still purchase 2, or even all 3 consoles, and most of them reside at various forums, so the perception of multi-console owners seems higher, when in probability they are a very very tiny percentage of all consumers.
