I've read about how several companies intentionally try to kill one of their products because they have a newer version ready for public consumption in a short amount of time.
As counter-intuitive as it may seem, Microsoft's best option is to sabotoge their own console so that they don't screw over even more people when the inevitable Xbox TWO gets announced next year or the year after. All signs are pointing to this possibility, especially Geoff's tweet quoting MS's words today.
Because things are not going as Microsoft wants, they will probably force a new generation too quickly like how they dropped support of the original Xbox in just 3 years.
