1) Adopted by MS and Sony, it would look desperate and sad, and simply validate everything Nintendo's been doing.
2) As a 3rd party, or late in console life, add on, it would not be seen as
standard equipment. Developers wouldn't make games for it, or at least not devoted to it (which is what you really need), and so gamers wouldn't bother buying it.
3) By the time it is released, the Wii will be retailing for $9.95. So who needs it?
