I found that using the Circuit Special and the Slicks worked best for me. However, seeing as how you keep getting hit by items then something with good acceleration might help so you can make a quicker recovery. Maybe go with the Circuit Special and the Roller tires (the small red ones.) You might also want to pick someone from the medium weight class like Shy Guy or Toadette.
