Neither 3D nor VR actually failed or underwhelmed, just their implementations up until now did. Future implementations could eventually become a lot more viable for what concerns price, practicalness, HW requirements and comfort of use and finally succeed. Or they could fail again, but this cannot be predicted basing oneself on previous implementations that failed in one or more important aspects, on the contrary, their failure due to one or more critical flaws should make us lean towards success for their successors that manage to fix them. Obviously after a big flop, some time is needed before launching a new implementation, to avoid that people still pissed-off spread too much negative world-of-mouth.
