I really hope they shore up this aspect of the game in the full release because, unlike you, it's a game-breaker for me. Most of the enjoyment I get out of racers now is online and if that segment of the game is broken, I won't buy it. I really only play the single-player to learn tracks and unlock cars for the online segment.
