I DID USE DIGITAL DOWNLOAD FOR GAMES FOR WAY OVER A DECADE.... I can even tell you witch game it was called for the first one the 4th coming and released in 1999-2000.... beside that I have been using DD for games ever since cracking got invented and internet got main stream.... which is way more than a decade...
but beside that I have been gaming personnaly for over 2 decades and I have had way more issues with physical than I ever did with DD... so yeah even if what you say is a probability we can't honnestly dismiss... I can guaranty you the chances of losing, damaging or geting stolen of a physical disc is (IN MY CASE AT LEAST) way higher than the chance of losing my digital dowload or getting hacked... I have redundency of all my data and I think all my accounts are well protected....
yeah sure steam, apple, MS etc can be hacked but not only it doesn't really concern me since I have everything saved localy, but even if it would happen on a so major scale or regular basis that the probability of it being a higher concern than the risk probability on physical. chances are those company have backs strong enough to handle any major issue financially... so even in the most extreme of cases I'm still dead convince by experience that I have absolutely no reason to be more worried about loosing my DD than my physical disc.... especially since CD rom, DVD rom, BR rom is probably the shittiest storing solution ever invented in terms of durability and reliability...
and to be completely fare I couldn't care less about games a decade old... in any case if those games are still relevant today you can find them, I was a big fan of command and conquer back then I still have the box somewhere at my parents home but I still bought the DD version because it is 10 times more convenient.... not even sure it would work properly on win 7/8 and if I want to play it in an other decade.... and steam is dead or whatever ... well then I'll pay a buck or 10 then to whome ever sells it at that point if I really want to play such a crappy game by then over nostalgia... instead of having to store with very little guarantee, discs that take space, collect dust and get so easily damaged...
simple beside collecting value and/or resell needs for people that don't want to keep their games, are on a budget or a mix of both, current format of physical disc have absolutely nothing on digital.... since I don't care about both, I don't collect, and by the time I'm done with a game, usually it has less resale value than the gas it's gonna cost me to go to the store to sell it..... DD is the way to go for me no doubt...
