Anyway, the man can easily go to his country's embassy or consulate to get his passport situation sorted out.

Only question is how long it'll take. Foreign Ministry (/state department) bureaucrats tend to be rather slow-acting.

Shouldn't be too bad. I had a pretty decent experience with them when I was there. I had to sit in the waiting area for 5 or 6 hours before my number was called, but I walked in with a visa that expired in a couple weeks, and left with a 2 month extention. Turns out, "I just want to stay longer" is a valid reason for a visa extension in Korea..
