The PS2's only direct competition when it released was the Dreamcast which was already on its death bed. Developers already hated it because of the piracy issues. Add to that over a year head start over the Gamecube and Xbox, and we were living in a world where the internet and mass gaming news was nowhere near as popular as it is now. Currently, Sony is following normal generation cycles, has two dirrect compitent competitors, and game media is huge right now.
Call me crazy, but PS2-like home console sales wont happen for a long long time if they ever happen again.

Well we will have to wait, but the PS brand is getting the old love it lost with the PS3 back now, and I can only see a future in which Sony dominates the market totally with the next console, in which may come at 2018-2020. Just if newcomers get really well in the market, or Sony screws up the PS5 launch like the PS3, I think Sony next console will have something like 70%+ of the marketshare (it will get 50%+ already this gen IMO), and that's absolutelly above 150M to a new gen. Well, we have so much things to consider that I can be really really wrong, but it's what I can see right now.
But the PS4 don't seems like can break this barrier.

I agree that the PS4 will have roughly 50-55% market share this gen. Hoping for anything higher than that is a pipe dream though. In a world with 3 consoles, a 70-80% market share for one console is simply not possible any more.
