That's a naive way at looking at the industry. In reality, overlap is in the majority, and PC gamers who already have machines that outspec this generation, which is not a small niche at all, typically buy consoles solely because of exclusives. If something is on PC, let alone steam, then that is one less reason to buy to console. That is why it hurts sales, it might not be directly measurable, but we know it will have an effect. The greater issue is that this doesn't become a regular thing, which is why the QB rumor is troubling. |
If you own a high end PC, you're a PC gamer, regardless of whether if you own a console. Most consoles gamers don't own a gaming PC. As an analogy, I'm sure most console or PC gamers also have a smartphone/tablet/iPad and play casual games on those platforms, but I'm sure the console/PC people don't call themselves iPad/android/mobile casual gamers. However, there are lots of people (1 billion people that downloaded Temple Run or the millions that download flappy bird) that are casual gamers, but don't own a console/PC. Casual gamers and video gamers are not the same market. PC gamers and console gamers are not the same market. Similarly, there were many casual/family (Mom and Pops) gamers that bought a Wii, but won't buy a Wii U. Not the same market.
