I think everyone is expecting MS to drop the price this fall at some point when they launch a new game. I have never understood this mentality and I can't remember a case ever in the history of video games where a console price was dropped at the exact same time that a "true system seller" i.e. Halo 3 was released. Maybe I'm forgetting the past, but I've always remembered incremental price cuts coming in response to poor sales and lack of any solid releases to move systems. Microsoft has a stellar line up through the end of the year and I just can't imagine a price drop of any real significance until after the 2007 Holiday season. Even if they do, I'd be really, really surprised if it is any more than $50...
Microsoft has already stated publicly that it expects it's gaming division to be profitable in the year starting July. Cutting the price on the 360 now is going to really challenge that statement.
All of that said, however, MS is making a move to clear the channel of existing inventory in preparation for something. That something may simply be the move to the new 65nm cpu and hardware revision to improve yield, reliability, lower system cost, etc., and MS is trying to clean out the current inventory by making less than they expect demand to be... Or quite possibly they are trying to clear as much of the channel as possible for a price cut.
I have been waiting for a while and all the price cut talk had me on the fence. I gave up waiting and jumped in and I'm glad I did. I have a bunch of older xbox games and new 360 games plus all the live/arcade content. It's a great system and worth the money. Period.
