Agreed. Cut scenes used to be a reward for getting somewhere in the story and treated you with scenes that would never be possible on current hardware. Instead graphic designers have to work within the confines of what can be rendered in real time on a console, vastly cutting down on the scale and look. Plus introducing load times interrupts the flow of the story.
They also do a good job of enhancing the feel of the game. The cut scenes in white knight chronicles elevated the world you're walking through by showing you the vision that the designers had in mind. Same for the character designs with the hand drawn cut scenes in Ni No Kuni.
Pros:
- Glimpse into the future of gaming
- Hiding load times behind pre-rendered scenes
- Shorter development time, cut scenes can be made independently.
- Glitch free scenes, all effects, draw distance, amount of characters to the max.
Cons:
- Your character might look different, yet you can always render the character model into a pre-made scene if that's really a problem.
- Disk space. Stupid idea this gen to install everything to the hdd. Cut scenes can easily be played from the Blu-ray drive while the game sets up the next part. Blame digital distribution for the demise of pre-rendered scenes.
