I think it's a good thing. Nintendo isn't the only company that gets territorial over its IPs, you know. Take a look at the music and movie industries. People get sued over having 30 second clips of songs playing in the background! They get their channels taken down over having a few seconds of remixed footage from movies! Let's Plays get to have the entire thing up, and used to be able to make money off of it. Quite frankly, they don't deserve to make money off of it. I watch my share of LPs, but I'm not so entitled as to think that gamers should be able to get money just for playing a game and uploading it to the internet with a voice over of their commentary. It's not right, no matter who it is. But forget all that for a second, and realize that this is what companies do. They protect their IP. The law protects parody and fair use, which is great, but that law isn't enforced properly because the lines of what is legal and what isn't are too blurry, and as a result, perfectly harmless things get taken down. I see this effort on Nintendo's part a great first step towards establishing a standard for fan made content. I strongly hope it spreads to the rest of the gaming industry, and even moreso, I hope it spreads to the movie, tv, and music industries as well, where it is desperately needed.
