I'm on the 3rd disc, so far good, but I wouldn't call it best JRPG of last gen. Gameplay is a straight forward turn based RPG. I didn't really like the main character that much, not to spoil anything, but he basically has no emotions at first, but that's part of the story, even after that though hes pretty lifeless apart from the big moments SPOILER like his daughter dieing or getting his wife back. Those little background stories really brought him to life for me, but you have to go out of your way to find them, I found myself looking at guides cause if I didn't get them I felt I was missing out and tbh without them I wouldn't care half as much about the main character. I will say though those stories are really well written. The story so far is good, the story in JRPGs usually is the best near the end so someone else is probably better to explain that since I'm only on the 3rd disc.
