Less turn based than Valkyria. It's entirely optional to use planning mode, however in practice you can't do without it, which makes it feel a bit like a turn based game. Dragon age origins would be a closer analogy.
Child of light is more like final fantasy yet with some rythm game elements. Timing your strikes is very important. You can't move around in combat, but you can always swap characters during combat and all abilities are always available.
