I just want to state that sometimes that rural area/high ownership rates and urban/low can be flipped on its head.
Where I live it's a big deal if we have 1 murder every few years. So I feel no real desire or need to own one. I don't hunt and I don't feel endangered when I go in public. The extent of any gun I would own would be for target practice and I would just rather play Battlefield and spend hundreds on video games instead.
If I lived in a big city with a high murder rate I would me much more inclined to buy a nice pistol. But I'm still of the mindset that everyone having more guns and being allowed to carry then everywhere would not really help anything, probably make things worst. I definitely wouldn't want the drunk angry asshole in the bar next to me packing.
But that's the thing about this whole debate. A subjectively small number of people believe in ultimate unquestionable gun ownership with no restrictions . A small number of people, liberals included, believe we should just ban guns completely. But whenever these arguments come up most people go at it from one of those two stances.
