Does the PS4 need a system seller this year? No, not really, because the system is selling on its own. There are a ton of games coming out this fall that will make people want a new console. If the XO had some big titles releasing I'd say otherwise but that doesn't really look to be an issue.
I think it's more important that Sony not rush games out before they are ready. Better that they release a nice stream of content over time than worry about front-loading for the first year. They're leading the first lap of the race, they don't need to blow their engine up.
Besides, I'm a firm believer that one of the best PS3 strategies was how they would release quality exclusives in the first half of the year and not just in the crowded fall. I've always thought that was very smart.
