Well english isn't necessarily useless, these are just the kind of people you would find in a Starbucks talking about the that sort of stuff. Although, 4 year degrees in art history and psychology are about equally useless.
Talking chaos theory and fractals is one thing. Talking about what previous scientists thought about God is useless and it's a given that we will find out a lot more about the universe than they imagined. In any case I think when you mix up science, math, and God in a conversation about the universe it's just coffee shop philosophy.
