I find it funny people comparing racing sims like GT5 and Forza to Mario Kart 8 to downplay the game. Sorry guys, racing sims are much less demanding on hardware than what we have here with Mario Kart 8, which is why those games are running with AA and Mario Kart 8 isn't. You are all comparing apples to oranges.

A much better comparison would be kart racing games to Mario Kart 8, and MK8 blows out of the water every last-gen karting game, running at full 720p with 60FPS to boot. Wii U is more powerful than a PS3/360, but it's not anywhere near comparable to a X1 or PS4, people expecting this game to run at 1080p were delusional, specially considering last gen karting games ran at 30FPS and 640p(Sonic and Sega All Stars racing for example, and that still looks worse than Mario Kart 8).

you have to be kidding? sims are having to render models thats are 10x more detailed them the kart models in mario kart, not mention each car model has to render a cockpits and realistic physics, sims have way more going on screen then mariokart 8, and require way more work, where as in mario kart 8 they can focuse way more on graphics, cause they dont have to render 200-300 models with cock pit views and realstic physics. the reason why mario kart 8 looks much better then those kart racers you mentioned was cause one is a multiplatform and runs the same on wiiu, and the othere was a very low budget project, which is not even a good looking game on ps3 in the first place

Yeah, sims have to render models 10x more detailed, at the expense of background detail and polygon count, lightning, textures, animations, particles and shader effects. It's much less punishing on the hardware than something like Mario Kart 8, that's why it runs with AA on 720p and can afford to render at 1280x1080(not even full HD, mind you) with widly variable framerate, having a hard time hitting 60FPS. GT5 doesn't render anywhere near 200-300 cars per scene, in fact, if you see more than 6 on screen it's a rare case.  Sonic all Stars Racing may be a multiplatform release but it's the kart racer that looks closer to Mario Kart 8 and, really, Mario Kart 8 has much better lightning, texturing and higher polygon count. LBP Karting wasn't a low budget project, it's a Sony exclusive after all, just because it's a karting game doesn't mean it's dirt cheap to make, LOL.

its the worse looking sony exclusive by far, its like comparing uncharted 3 to pikmin 3, LBP is hardly pushing sony's console, while mario kart 8 is easily in the top 5 best looking wiiu games. as for comparing sonic all star racing its also on wiiu, and its not doing anything more then the 360/ps3 versions, if it was doing 60fps on wiiu then we would have somthing to talk about. as for GT5 vs mario kart 8, GT5 looks is pushing way more poly's, each premium car is pushing over 200,000 poly's, along good AA, and at a higher resolution. you just compare pics and you can see way more detail in the GT5 pics.
