No one has the freedom to murder college students nor is anyone advocating the right for people to do so. . Why did you say that if not to ellicit an emotional respose rather than a reasoned one?
Why we can't have a gun registry is the same as to why we can't have a religion registry or a speech registry, it violates a person's right to privacy.
You saying the right to bear arms equals right to murder college kids is like me saying right to freedom of religion equals right to fly planes into buildings or freedom of speech equals right to distribute child pornography.

Guns are specifically used for killing, religion and speech or not. And there are limits on free speech too (fire in a crowded theater, slander, etc. etc.). Someone who has an ounce of mental illness (or hangs around with people that do or has family members that do) shouldn't be able to be near buying a gun. And registering a gun doesn't mean you can't own one so your rights to own one aren't infringed.

Guns are specifically used for shooting, which can include killing, wounding or warning someone that you can defend yourself. And killing or wounding are not necessarily bad if you are defending yourself from an attacker. Guns are tools that can be used for bad or good depending on their use. Religion or free speech can also be used for good or bad depending on their use.
And yes your right that registering a gun does not infringe one's right to own a gun, it infringes one's right to privacy, just like asking people to register their religion does not violate their right to religion, but their right to privacy.
