Resident Evil 1-3 comes to mind, those games had horrible controls. One of the many reasons why I won't go back to them.

THIS!  I know a lot of people hate on new versions of Tomb Raider and Resident Evil but they seem to forget that those games were getting bashed for being stale back when they were in their third entries!  I LOVED RE 1, 2, Zero and Remake when they first released.  I HATED RE3, Code Veronica, and Zero (Yes, I loved and hated it) when they were released.  They needed a change.  If people got what they wanted, those franchises would be dead.

Pretty much. For long running franchises, game mechanics need to evolve in order stay fresh and keep games from getting stale.

Looking back though, I'm glad I was a part of those gens.. particularly the 5th gen, when 3D was in its infancy. Those FMV's!
