Actually you don't need to sing to do well (tho it gives a good chance), you can just sing whatever as long as your pitch hits the right note to hit the bars right. I've beaten people at this game just by singing giberish but trying to match my pitch with the bars on the screen.
Of course as a beer game this technique will completely fail lol
