Over the years many genres have had been introduced into the gaming market. Today's market is mainly filled with 3rd person shooters, Horror games, RPG's, 1st person shooters and platformers. While this is fine I would love it if the genre of 2D beat 'em ups made an spectacular comeback. Why? Because not only does it bring back nostalgia these types of games created some amazing retro gems (Battletoads, Streets of rage, Altered beast, and all those Movie/T.V inspired games). It's safe to say Hack and slashes have taken the place from the 2D beat 'em ups and now they are a rare sight when they used the be the kings of the arcades.
The closest big Franchise that reminds me of the genre is the kirby series and even though they are still platformers at heart they bring the awesomeness of the genre when launcing an enemy up into the air, bodyslaming them, or just burning them alive. Viewtiful joe is another great example of how the 2D beat 'em ups can still make an incredible game. Honestly I would even be fine with more 2D hack and slashes like Golden Axe. Alas the industry seems to be more focused on first person shooters and platformers for the genre to resurge but still a man can dream.
