Maybe its not something you particurally care about, but to say that it doesn't have a major impact on image quality is incorrect. 

Higher resolutions are really only useful for the 3 aforementioned qualities ...

1. To reduce geometry aliasing and achieve a clearer image.

2. Higher resolution textures will make very effective use of higher resolutions as it can drastically increase detail in tandem with it. 

3. Larger draw distance and screen size will also largely benefit from higher resolutions as it will be very easy to resolve far away objects. 

If all of these three conditions are met then these assertions should be taken as a fact that a higher resolution will make for a better gaming experience and is JUST as important as having higher framerates.
