Also there are already sites that don't show any content unless you disable adblock. The more people get adblock, the higher the risk for other sites to jump on board.

It just becomes an arms race, however. Adblock makers then do an end-run around whatever antiadblock protections are in place.

The simpler thing, as somebody mentioned, is for adblock to somehow send a signal to the adserver which registers an ad as "viewed" whether or not you physically saw it.
