It seems to be the most divisive entry on the series, next to XIII and XII. I had fun with it, it's not a bad game, but it's one of my least favorite of the series. I think the story had potential - I really enjoy that military theme from disc 1. But by the end of the game it's just... what?

Also, the game is seriously lacking on the villain's department, imo. Seifer is a douchebag for no reason and Ultimecia is just there.

That seems to be a recurring theme in Final Fantasy games. The story usually starts out fairly realistic and then just gets crazier and crazier.

I really liked the rivalry with Seifer. But I agree it was lacking, especially coming after FF 7 and Sephiroth.

It seems to be, yes. FFIV also begins fairly realistic and then the characters eventually go to the moon, wow. But VIII's plot just seems more absurd - almost presumptuous really. It culminates in "Laguna is President of Esthar". And that ending cinematic (after beating Ultimecia and before the credits)... wow.

Like I said, not a bad game. Even the plot is decent, but it feels unfinished and rushed. As if they finished writing disc 1 and then said "fuck it, it's almost lunch time. Just finish the damn thing". There's a reason why it's the FF with the most theories ("Rinoa is Ultimecia" and "Squall is dead")
